7 years ago the Vermont Bicycle Shop crew did a bike packing trip up one of the steepest and tallest paved roads in Vermont. An abandoned US military radar base has occupied the top of East Mountain for over half a century. Most famously, in 1961, the radar base tracked an unidentified object on its screens for 18 minutes, just a couple hours before Barney and Betty Hill were allegedly abducted by aliens.

One Halloween weekend 7 years ago, our crew rode for 20 miles and climbed almost 4000 feet (3200 feet in the last few miles) and camped overnight on the wind swept mountain top, among the remains of that cold war radar base.

This year we’re returning to the Barney and Betty Hill story, this time visiting the site where their abduction occurred.
Most likely Nov 1 and 2.
We’ll ride from Wells River across the New Hampshire border. We’ll ride rail trails, gravel roads, paved roads, class 4 roads, and a little single track across the northern part of the Kinsman Mountain wilderness to get to the site where Barney and Betty Hill were reportedly taken by visitors from another world.
We’ll stay overnight and ride the same route back the next day.
As invitees respond logistics for this ride will take place.
Currently we plan to drive to Wells River early Sunday morning (in as few cars as possible).
We will leave those cars overnight in Wells River.
We will most likely stay at cabins and or motel rooms in the Lincoln, NH area.
There appears to be an abundance of restaurants in the area as well. So food and bedding may not be needed. That could change depending on any number of variables at this point. Most variables will depend on those who RSVP and how soon they do. So if you cannot attend please be sure to respond and say so as soon as possible. This will allow planning to move forward for the trip.
Everyone who joined us for the original Radar Rd. trip has been sent an invitation.
